Joel E. McCarty's SubdivisionJoel Edward McCarty was born December 9, 1856 in Macomb, Illinois, son of Alexander and Mary W. Yost McCarty. He married Ella M. Richardson in Menlo, Iowa on November 3, 1887. Ella was born April 21, 1863 in Warren County, Pennsylvania, daughter of J.B. and Fannie Markle Richardson. They had a daughter, Helen Mary (October 21, 1889 - July 5, 1940)
Joel was named for his maternal grandfather. His mother, Mary was the older sister of architect Joseph Warren Yost. In 1880 Joel lived with his parents in Jefferson Township, Adair County, Iowa. In 1897, Joel lived at 359 Wilson Avenue and was a draftsman, for Yost and Packard, his uncle's architecture firm. By 1898 Joel had partnered with Clarence E. Richards to open their own architecture firm, Richards and McCarty. They designed the new Ohio Institution for the Deaf and Dumb at 400 East Town Street, for which ground was broken in September 1898. Joel had also moved into his new house at 1530 East Long Street. McCarty and Richards added another Yost apprentice, George Henry Bulford to their firm in 1899, becoming Richards, McCarty and Bulford. The business continued until 1943. The firm designed a number of Columbus landmarks and at least three other homes in Woodland Park, 1570 Hawthorne Park, 1607 East Long Street and 241 Woodland Avenue. The McCartys lived at 1530 East Long Street at least through 1912, the year their daughter married Robert Clay Van Voorhis. Mc Carty subdivided the land that would become Menlo Place, and in 1919, built himself a new home at 1545 Menlo Place. McCarty lived there until his death. Ella died on June 3, 1935. McCarty was 95 years old when he died 13 days after being struck by an automobile at East Long Street and Parkwood Avenue on July 9, 1952. He died July 22, 1952. The McCartys are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. |
