Mohr House

Lot 6 Smith's Woodland Park Addition

Leopold Mohr purchased lot 6 from the Smiths on January 9, 1905. Lot 7, which was owned by Josie Fuller was transferred to the Mohrs in 1907. Josie had purchased lot 7 October 14, 1904 from the Smiths for $800. 

In 1907 the Mohrs lived at 1592 Mt. Vernon Avenue. This house was built about 1907 and they moved they moved here by 1908.

Leopold H. Mohr was born October 11, 1856 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of German immigrants Joel and Barbara Lehman Mohr. He married the widowed Lillie Blanch Lucas in Los Angeles, California on June 25, 1896. Lillie was born in Columbus on December 25, 1869, daughter of John and Olive C. Burgess Lucas. They had three children: Leopold, Jr. (May 1, 1897 - May 6, 1897), Erwin Lucas (May 24, 1898) and Frank L. (August 15, 1902).

Lillie married William J.F. Fuller when she was 16. William and Leopold were both upholsterers. Fuller was born in 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of Joseph and Mary Jane Fuller. They married in Franklin County on November 4, 1885. They had a daughter, Josie Mabel (October 1886 - 1978). Fuller died December 5, 1890.

Leopold and his parents came to Columbus before 1860. Leopold's lifelong occupation was that of upholsterer. Leopold is listed in the 1876 City Directory.

In 1914 and 1925, Henry J. Pogue, printer, boarded with the Mohrs.

Leopold died January 27, 1919 of tabes dorsalis (syphilitic myelopathy) from an untreated syphilis infection. 

In 1920, Lillie's daughter, Josie Hutchinson, and her children were living at 1544 Clifton Avenue with the Lillie. Josie was working as a clerk. Josie had married Harley Marion Hutchison in Franklin County on February 27, 1907. Harley died in the 1918 influenza epidemic on October 28, 1918. In 1918 the Hutchinsons lived at 1434 Mt. Vernon Avenue. Josie and Harley had four children: Olive Blanche (August 13, 1908 - April 21, 1981), Leona (1912), Vernon (1914) and Ruth (1916). Josie married Lewis Seymour in Franklin County on October 1, 1927. 

Lillie died August 27, 1924 of pneumonia after having a fractured pelvis suffered in an auto collision. The Mohrs are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

On January 8, 1925, the property was transferred to Lillie's children and heirs: Josie, Erwin and Frank. They sold the house to the Morrisons on September 24, 1925. 

Walter W. (Virginia) Morrison, was a real estate agent. The Morrisons lived at 76 South Dawson Avenue in Bexley. Morrison sold the house on July 2, 1926 to Faun H. Johnson, assuming a $4,500 mortgage. Faun never lived in the house, but was probably an employee of Morrison's, and had title to the house associated with her employment.

In 1927-30 the Javerts rented the house. 

Viggo Ossian Jävert was born August 3, 1888 in Sweden.
He married Ingleborg Hilda Thulin about 1918. Ingleborg was born about July 6, 1893 in Sweden. They had two daughters, Elsa B. (January 10, 1920) and Greta M. (July 5, 1925).

The Javerts came to the Unites States in 1920. Elsa had been born in Havana, Cuba. The Javerts lived in four different houses on Clifton. In 1922, the Javerts lived at 1528 Clifton Avenue. In 1925, at 1623 Clifton Avenue and in 1926 at 1532 Clifton Avenue. They later moved to 280 Rhoads Avenue. 

Javert was a physician and mechanotherapist. 

Viggo died December 28, 1968. Ingleborg died in Athens, Ohio on December 5, 1990. 

On April 18, 1927, the Dums bought the house. They continued to maintain the house as a rental property. Dum was a book publisher at 67 East Long Street. In 1918 the Dums lived at 2263 Summit Street. 

From 1931 to 1935 the Courtrights lived here. Wayne Ezra Courtright was born May 16, 1889 in Jerome, Union County, Ohio, son of Franklin W. "Frank" and Laura Courtright. He married Florence May Carter in Franklin County on February 16, 1916. Frances was born July 22, 1888 in Delaware County, Ohio, daughter of Calvin C. and Bessie Horn Carter.  They had Betty Jane (1917) 

Frank W. Courtright also lived here. He was an architect, electrician and building contractor. (son of Wayne)

In 1925, Frank Sr. was a confectioner at 2369 East Main Street. (father of Wayne here?, no...)

Wayne was a graduate of Ohio State, and worked as an farmer, architect, carpenter, salesman, worked at a brass foundry and was an investigator for the State Department of Agriculture.

Wayne died September 20, 1965. 

In 1934, the Slocumbs also lived here. Linden Hubert Slocumb was born January 2, 1882 in Guernsey County, son of Isaac and Matilda A. Stone Slocumb.  
He married Bessie Estella Young in Franklin County on June 28, 1905. Bessie was born March 29, 1886 in Truro Township, Franklin County, daughter of Milton Valentine and Addie F. Moore Young. They had three daughters, Martha Y. (October 23, 1907 - December 20, 1982), Dorothy Stone (April 20, 1915 - December 22, 1935), and Janice C. ( April 24, 1922 - August 2, 2005).

Linden was a young man in Newark, Ohio, accepting a position as stenographer in Columbus in 1904. In 1910 and through 1920 the Slocumbs lived in Cambridge, Ohio. In 1930 they lived in Springfield, Ohio and Linden was vice president of a tool shop. He was later a city employee. In 1935 the Slocumbs lived at 87 Hoffman Avenue.

Dorothy was a 4th grade school teacher in Gahanna. She was a passenger in a car involved in a collision at Kelton Avenue and Mound Street on December 22, 1935; her skull was crushed in the collision. Linden died of stomach cancer on May 6, 1936. Bessie died March 29, 1958.

In 1935, the Ramseys lived here. 

Stanley Matthews Ramsey was born August 12, 1873 in Cincinnati, Ohio
His second marriage was to Hester M. Courtright. 
Hester was born in 1897, daughter of Franklin W. and Laura McCullaugh Courtright. They has a son, Van Courtright (February 4, 1927 - July 22, 2011) and a daughter, Virginia. 


In 1927 the Ramseys lived in Cincinnati. In 1949 they lived at 64 Winner Avenue. 

Stanley died in Hartford, Connecticut on August 24, 1952. Hester died in 1979 or 1981. Hester is buried at Forest Rose Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio.



On April 8, 1938, Henrietta L. Pymer purchased the house. see 1542 Clifton Avenue.

Seth Lincoln Pymer was born April 3, 1867 in Delta, Pennsylvania, son of Benjamin and Rebecca Pymer. He married Henrietta Lear. Henrietta was born in April 1870

Seth was a plaster contractor. 

Seth died May 11, 1929. Henrietta died in 1948. They are buried in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Henrietta rented the house to the Jaskuleks. Meyer and Ida 1938-1941

Henrietta sold the house on May 22, 1946 to sisters, Malissa Moore and Chloe Moore Simpson.

Chloe was born February 18, 1891 and Malissa was born in December 20, 1894 both in Montezuma, Mercer County, Ohio. They were daughters of John and Nancy Ann Ellis Moore.

Chloe married Frank Albert Simpson in Mercer County on October 10, 1911. Frank was son of Joseph and Hattie J. (Etta) Davis Simpson, born in Columbus on August 25, 1890. They had a daughter Addie Vernice (February 6, 1913 - February 12, 1913), buried at Ellis Cemetery in Mercer County, Ohio. Frank was a Baltimore & Ohio railroad brakeman. He died on April 25, 1918 of injuries from a railroad accident that January. He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

In 1922, Chloe was a clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad and boarded at 1159 Dennison Avenue. From 1928 to 1935, Malissa worked as a manicurist.

In from 1929 to 1940 the sisters lived at 444 East Norwich Avenue. Chloe was a calculating machine operator for the Bureau of Unemployment. By 1960, the sisters had moved to Apopka, Florida.

Chloe died in Orlando, Florida in October 1966. Malissa died March 28,1980 in Maitland, Florida.

On July 20, 1960, the sisters sold the house to Charles W. Steele. He transferred the house the same day to Charlene S. Steele.
