208 Parkwood Avenue
Shull House

Lot 9 of Hannah Taylor's Addition, etc.

This house was completed about 1906 and first occupied by the Shulls.

Louis Frederick Shull was born April 16, 1854 in Sugar Grove, Ohio, son of German parents, Frederick and Katherine Wahl Shull. He married Jessie F. Burris in Tuscarawas County on February 20, 1875. Jessie was born November 8, 1856 in Newcomerstown, Ohio, daughter of Jeremiah and Margaret Pope Burris.

The Shulls had a long-term boarder, Grace Clark, born in 1885. She lived with them from 1906 through 1914. Jessie's nephew, Robert S. Burris lived with them from about 1900 to 1910. Burris was born September 11, 1886 in Newcomerstown, Ohio, son of Leander T. Burris. Robert worked as a grocer and a salesman. Burris later became a minister and traveled to China as a missionary. He was pastor of the Oakland Park Presbyterian Church.

Before moving here the Shulls lived at 377 Monroe Avenue. Shull was a passenger conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired in 1920. In 1915 the Shulls moved to 393 St. Clair Avenue. They lived for a time in Dunedin, Florida. They later lived with their "foster-son," "Dr. Robert S. Burris" at 322 Piedmont Road.

Louis died August 28, 1938. Jessie died February 16, 1940. They are buried in Westerville, Ohio.

The Moores bought the house on October 9, 1914, assuming a $2,000 mortgage.

Walter Moore was born about August 31, 1870 in Columbus, son of Thomas Edson and Marie R. Walter Moore. He married Elizabeth M. Phillips on December 21, 1904 in Meigs County. Elizabeth was born April 19, 1878 in Pomeroy, Ohio, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Kohl Phillips. They had two daughters, Della M. (1906) and Rosalie V. (1913).

Walter started with the Hanna Paint Company in about 1897 as a chemist. The Paint, Oil and Drug Review of September 8, 1909 reported, "Wm. H. Morrison has resigned as vice-president of the Hanna Paint Manufacturing Company, of Columbus, O., and is succeeded by Walter Moore, who has had charge of the manufacturing departments of the company for the past twelve years."

Elizabeth died April 15, 1953. Walter died February 8, 1955. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

On March 10, 1951, Florence A. Rennick bought the house from the Moores.

Florence Alberta Rennick was born July 15, 1890 in Ohio, daughter of Henry Mason and Elnora Alestock Rennick. She probably married and divorced between 1911 and 1920. Florence bought the house at 1450 Hildreth Avenue in April 1925. She and her parents lived there and her sister Hazel lived there off and on until 1951 when Florence sold that house and purchased 208 Parkwood Avenue.

Florence had a number of occupations. She worked as a domestic in 1911, a stenographer in 1920, secretary in 1923-1925, a seamstress and dressmaker 1930-1938, clerk in 1941, private secretary in 1945, and office secretary in 1954.

From 1953-1957, boarders William C. and Eleanor A. Gilbert lived at 208 Parkwood Avenue. William worked as a driver for Battelle Memorial Institute in 1953 and 1954.

Florence died June 5, 1972. She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

On March 7, 1972, Florence deeded the house to her sister Hazel with a quit-claim deed.

Hazel Belle Rennick was born January 20, 1895. She married Charles L. Ball on May 20, 1916 in Franklin County. They were divorced before 1920. Hazel married Claudius B. Smith on July 31, 1936 in Pickaway County. They also divorced. Hazel married Norman K. Johnson on September 19, 1940 in Franklin County.

In 1934 and 1951 Hazel worked as a domestic/maid.

Hazel died August 8, 1982. She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Hazel sold the house on May 2, 1971 to Ruth C. Wallace.
