Shiffler House

Lot 7, Nelson Place Addition

The Shifflers lived here from about 1908 to 1927.

Charles Edward "Charlie" Shiffler was born June 28, 1873 in Gahanna, Ohio, son of Philip J. and Rebecca  "Bess" Cotterman Shifler. He married Rose Nell Hammel in Franklin County on October 31, 1899. Rose was born September 27, 1873 in Gahanna, daughter of John and Hattie Now Hammel. They had two children: Earl C. (September 23, 1904) and Pauline T. (August 26, 1909)

In 1901 the Shifflers lived at 341 North 20th Street. Charles was partners with Adam W. Quinn, running a saloon, Shiffler & Quinn at 1053 Mt. Vernon Avenue. This location is labeled as a saloon on the 1891 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map. In 1908 the saloon was named Clark & Dow (Louis Clark and William Dow).

In 1918, Charles was a night watchman at the Ralston Steel Car Company.

By 1931 the Shifflers moved to 729 South Roys Avenue. Charlie was a shipping clerk. In 1940 Charlie was working as a watchman for the Tracy Wells Company.

Charles died in March 1953. Rose died February 21, 1963. They are buried at Mifflin Cemetery in Gahanna.

The Shifflers sold the house on July 24, 1930 to Russell L. Strow.

Strow transferred the house with a quit-claim deed on September 29, 1933 to Blanche Johnson of 28 North Oakley Avenue. In 1935 the Strows lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Blanche transferred the house to her husband, Okey E. Johnson on August 15, 1939. Okey was a real estate broker.

Okey sold the house to Bernie and Julia Macklin on April 28, 1943.

The Macklins rented the house from the Johnsons as early as 1935.

Bernie Macklin was born May 25, 1895 in Gallaway, Tennessee. He married Julia Ann Wilson in Fayette County, Tennessee on February 24, 1918. Julia was born November 15, 1900 in Tennessee, daughter of Alexander and Frances Walton Wilson. They had three children: Mary Frances (December 1, 1918 - August 20, 1993), Florida V. (December 28, 1919 - September 5, 1985), and Zealer (February 12, 1921 - October 30, 1963)

The Macklins moved to Columbus about 1923. Bernie had been a farmer in Fayette County, Tennessee. In 1929 the Macklins lived at the rear of 1099 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The Macklins lived at 99 Atcheson before moving to this house.

in 1940 Bernie was a truck driver for the city. Seven people then lived in their house: Bernie and Julia, daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Emphis Jordan, their granddaughter Gwendlyn, son Macklin and Mamie Dodson, Bernie's mother. In 1942 he worked for Bonney-Floyd Steel Coating Company.

Julia died October 15, 1975. Bernie died September 28, 1977. They are buried at Union Cemetery.

The Macklins sold the house to the Board of Education on December 21, 1967.

The house was demolished before 1971.
