1648 Granville Street
Mabery House

Lot 7 Ryland's Woodland Place Addition

On June 6, 1895, real estate dealer A.D. Heffner bought lots 6,7,9, and 11 at sheriff's sale (forefeited by the Rylands, et al) for $8,400. In 1905, Charles Hansberger bought lot 7 from Heffner.

Hansberger was a builder, and also a furniture dealer. He probably built this house in 1905.

Hansberger sold the house on March 22, 1906 to the Maberys for $4,500.

Thomas Edward Mabery was born in December 4, 1852 in Wellsville, Ohio, son of Thomas and Annie Cox Mabery. He married Mary Louise Harris about 1875. Mary was born in December 2, 1851 in McKean Township, Licking County, Ohio, daughter of Jesse and Margaret Clark Harris. They had a son, Joseph Elmer (November 6, 1876).

In 1900 the Maberys lived at 457 Monroe Avenue. Thomas was a carpenter. In 1920 the Maberys lived on a farm in Granville, Ohio.

Tom died December 11, 1920. Mary died September 1, 1923. They are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, Ohio.

On March 29, 1910 the Maberys exchanged property with real estate dealer Charles A. McAllister.

About a month later, on April 22, 1910, McAllister sold the house to the Horns.

Williard W. Horn was born in October 1859 in Granville, Ohio, son of William Henderson and Sarah Ann Evans Horn. He married Elizabeth Florence Moore in Franklin County on December 27, 1883. Elizabeth was born November 18, 1865 in Springfield, Ohio, daughter of William P. Moore. They had ten children: Fannie (November 1884 - 1901), William Delmo (April 1886 - 1944), Martha J. "Mattie" (November 1889), Willard W., Jr. (August 4, 1893 - August 4, 1893), Rachel (June 1895), Sarah M. (January 1897), Edith M. (May 1899), unnamed son (July 29, 1906 - July 30, 1906). Other children died before 1900.

In 1900 the Horns lived in Pataskala, Ohio.

From about 1910 to 1919, Horn was superintendent of the municipal asphalt plant.

Elizabeth died at the house on December 15, 1919. She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Willard moved to Lynwood, California before 1930. He married Edith Brown (1866 -1934).

Willard died March 22, 1932 in Los Angeles County, California.

On July 29, 1920, Willard sold the house to the Outcalts.

Richard Henry Outcalt was born February 28, 1885 in Fairfield County, Ohio, son of James S. and Hannah A. Pickering Outcalt. He married Pleasant Rauch in Franklin County on May 21, 1907. Pleasant was born October 3, 1887 in Washington Township, Hocking County, Ohio, daughter of Peter and Hannah Kimble Rauch. They had two daughters Alice I. (June 13, 1911 - November 1, 2010) and Dorothy Elizabeth (January 11, 1916 - April 7, 2003).

In 1905, Richard worked in the grocery business with his father and uncle. Albert Outcalt & Company was located at 780 Mt. Vernon Avenue.

In 1910 the Outcalts lived at 252 North 17th Avenue. Richard was a grocer. In 1920 the Outcalts lived at 1364 Hildreth Avenue. Richard was then a butcher at the East Market on Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Richard died April 24, 1953. Pleasant died January 29, 1962. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

The Outcalts sold the house March 4, 1924 to Walter F. Grose.

The Outcalts were the last resident-owners for quite some time. With the exception of the Stubblefields who lived here for a few months in early 1930, the house was a rental property for the next 40 years, frequently changing ownership.

In 1927 and 1928 the Millers lived here. Raymond F. Miller was born July 25, 1883 in Ohio. He married Katherine Ellen Rowland about 1904. Katherine was born about 1885 in Ohio. They had three children: Rowland J. (February 5, 1906 - September 5, 1966), Neil W. (1908), and Elizabeth Harriet (September 10, 1911).

In 1910 the Millers lived at 121 Sherman Avenue. Raymond was a newspaper manager. In 1918, the Millers lived at 1433 Oak Street. Miller was then an accountant with Kilbourne and Jacobs Company. In 1920, Miller was a bookkeeper for the Ralston Steel Car Company.

Raymond died in Monroe Michigan on October 21, 1927.

In 1930 the Stubblefields purchased the house and lived her for a few months. Stephen Douglas Stubblefield was born December 15, 1869 in Jefferson County, Kansas, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Ross Stubblefield. He married his third wife, Dealia M. Weygant in Franklin County on February 15, 1924 . Dealia was born July 25, 1881 in Grove City, Ohio, daughter of William and Marie Simmons Weygant.

In the early 1920s Stubblefield was an express messenger. In the late 1920s and through 1930 he was a real estate salesman. Later he was a grocer in Delaware, Ohio.

Stubblefield died July 3, 1938. Dealia died May 17, 1961. They are buried at Union Cemetery.

While not owners, the Lepleys were long term renters, living here for ten years from 1931 to 1941.

James H. Lepley was born September 5, 1882 in Adams County, Ohio, son of John and Belle Haynes Lepley. He married Nellie May Duffey in Marion County on June 3, 1903. Nellie was born in August 1884 in Springfield, Ohio, daughter of John W. and Etta Knox Duffey. They had two children, John W. His 1918 Draft Registration card noted that he was missing one finger on his right hand and part of his little finger on his left. In 1918 the Lepleys lived at 231 North 22nd Street.

James' aunt, Elizabeth Lepley, seems to have always lived with them. Elizabeth was born about 1858 in Ohio.

In 1931, the Lepley's son John and his wife Agatha lived here. John married Agatha Wright in Franklin County on September 4, 1925. William Clarence Lepley was born July 20, 1892 in Hillsboro, Ohio, son of William Adam and Mary M. Stout Lepley. He first married Ann Margaret Stevenson on February 17, 1912 in Newport, Kentucky. They had two children. In 1917, they lived in Chesterfield County, Virginia, where Clarence was a farmer. Margaret died before 1930. In 1930, Clarence was living in Hamilton, Ohio. He had married the widowed Ona Belle Jacobs Lane. They probably divorced and in 1935 Clarence was living in Columbus and working as a carpenter. About 1938 to 1940, Clarence was a boarder at 1567 Richmond Avenue. In 1942 Clarence and Dora Lepley lived at 333 Taylor Avenue. Clarence died August 6, 1969.

In 1942 the Lepleys lived at 1437 Eastwood Avenue. James died September 3, 1942.

From about 1944 to 1949, the Duckworths were living at the house.

Van J. Duckworth was born June 24, 1894 in Sunbury, Ohio, son of Henry Jay and Mary (Ann) Van Houten Duckworth. He married Suzanne Brisset in Bourges, Cher, France on May 19, 1919. Suzanne was born December 27, 1899 in France. They had 5 children, Robert, Jack, Mary, David Morton (October 12, 1929 - August 13, 1999)

In 1945, Van was a serviceman for Shaffer Music Company. Jack was an assembler at Curtiss-Wright. Robert was in the Army. By 1949 the elder Duckworths had moved to 1213 Oakwood Avenue.

The senior Duckworths divorced, and Suzanne married Donald Arrasmith. She died in Florida on April 18, 1994. She had been a dressmaker.

From 1945 to 1949, Jack and Robert C. Duckworth lived here. Robert Charles Duckworth was born June 11, 1920, son of Van and Suzanne Briesset Duckworth. He married Dorothy Ann Waterman in Franklin County on July 31, 1945. Dorothy was born January 20, 1915 in Amsterdam, New York, daughter of Charles F. and Theresa Brenner Waterman.

Robert's first marriage didn't last long, as he married Dorothy H. Nicklaus in Franklin County on November 2, 1946. Dorothy was born December 17, 1922 in Columbus, daughter of Louis C. and Arkie Thompson Nicklaus.

Robert followed in his father's footsteps and was a radio repairman. In 1953 Robert owned Duckworth Television & Radio Service at 2189 East 5th Avenue and the Duckworths lived at 178 North Ardmore Road in Bexley.

In 1945 and 1946, Robert's brother Jack lived at the house. Jack was born December 21, 1924. He was a salesman at Moby's Department Store. Jack married Elsie A, Raypole in Franklin County on July 15, 1946.

Robert died June 30, 1990. He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. Jack died March 29, 2012.
