Ryland's Woodland Place Addition

Samuel Ryland, Jr. was born January 11, 1849 in West Virginia, son of Samuel and Mary A. Cransick Ryland.
He married Mary Elizabeth Dillon in Ohio County, West Virginia on November 27, 1873. Mary was born in November 1849 in Cincinnati, daughter of George and Mary Pawson Dillon. They had three children: Bessie Belle (February 1876 - 1962) Effie Russell (December 1877) and Paul Dillon (December 1878 - 1962).

In 1870, Ryland lived with his widowed mother in Wheeling, West Virginia, he was a cabinet maker. In 1880 the Rylands lived in Wheeling and Samuel was working as a cabinet maker. About 1881 the Rylands came to Columbus. In 1881 -1888 he was a baker and confectioner. In 1882 his shop was at 23 1/2 North High Street. In 1887 his bakery was at 523 North High Street and he lived at 521 North High Street. In 1889 he was with Bowe and Beggs (Jobbers and Retailers in Carpets, Oil Cloths, Rugs, Window Shades and Lace Curtains, 36 and 38 North High Street) and lived at 225 Marshall Avenue. He also lived at 241 and 236 Marshall Avenue. From 1893 to 1895 the Rylands lived at 289 Woodland Avenue. In 1895 Ryland was a builder, associated with Roberts and Company. In 1897 the Rylands lived at 1435 East Broad Street.

In 1900 the Rylands lived at 77 North 22nd Street. Samuel was a real estate agent. In 1919 the Rylands lived at 178 East 11th Avenue.

Ryland's obituary in the Columbus Dispatch, November 9, 1932, "RYLAND--Samuel, aged 82, retired real estate agent, died Tuesday, at his home, 1603 Doone road, Upper Arlington. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jerry Dennis and Mrs. Effie R. Hutchinson and three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Private services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the residence. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery by the Schoedinger Co. Omission of flowers is requested. He was a resident of Columbus for more than 50 years, coming from Wheeling."

From The Rylands, 1935. This compilation volume of the newsletter from Ligonier, Pennsylvania appeared in at least two editions with differing contents. The editor, Rev. Henry H. Ryland, credits Effie Ryland Hutchinson for this contribution:

"Samuel Ryland, Sr., was a cooper by trade. He married Mary Ann Cranswick and located in Wheeling, West Virginia. They had five children who grew up: Mary C. Ryland, the wife of John McAdams; Chas. H. Ryland, who married Mattie Melick; Josephine Ryland, the wife of Joseph M. Wood; Caroline S. Ryland, who married Henry A. Albright; and Samuel Ryland, Jr., who married Mary E. Dillon in 1873.

"His son Samuel, Jr. learned the cabinet maker's trade at Mendel's in the city of his birth, Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1880 he moved to Columbus, where he operated a bakery and confectionery at 529 North High Street. He sold this store and went into the real estate business in Columbus. He opened up the Ryland addition in the Eastern section of Columbus and engaged extensively in building and selling operations. He built a large intercepting sewer in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1901. He also promoted several gas and oil companies near Sistersville, West Virginia. He originated the 99-year lease plan in the City of Columbus, and at one time or another handled most of the important real estate in the main business district in Columbus. He was considered an authority on real estate in Columbus.

"In his 80th year he planned and personally supervised the erection of the 10-roomed house at 1603 Doone Road in which he resided at the time of his death, November 8, 1932. (Samuel's son-in-law, Herbert E. Hutchinson purchased the lot for that home from The Upper Arlington Company in 1927.)

"Samuel Ryland, Jr. had three children: Bessie Belle Ryland, who is the wife of Jerry Dennis, who is a lawyer in Columbus; Effie Russell Ryland, the wife of Herbert E. Hutchinson; and Paul Dillon Ryland, a graduate of Ohio State University in Civil and Mining Engineering, who passed away in 1907."
