1633 Vogel Avenue
Parnacott House

Lot 7 and parts of 6 and 8 D.D. Bolenbaugh as Trustee Subdivision

There was originally a narrow frame home on this property and the house number was 1633.

The Wards bought this property from Mazie McVay on April 21, 1919. Milton L. Ward probably built this house in the summer of 1919. The Auditor's Assessment Sheet notes that the house was a "new dwelling" in 1920.

Milton L. Ward was born in Ohio about 1858. The 1917 City Directory says Milton was a carpenter living at 1020 Hunter Avenue. In 1920 he is a carpenter with his own business.

Beulah V. Parnacott purchased the house on September 27, 1919 from the Wards, assuming a mortgage of $1,900.

Samuel Parnacott, Jr. was born March 10, 1883 in Michigan, son of Samuel and Jennie Burns Parnacott. He married Beulah Van Camp Bentley on July 25, 1910 in Detroit, Michigan. Beulah was born November 18, 1888 in New Martinsville, West Virginia, daughter of Jack and Bell Van Camp Bentley.

Samuel enlisted in the Army in 1904. In 1910 he lived with his parents in Detroit, Michigan.

The 1920 Census lists the Parnacotts at this address. Samuel's occupation is soldier at the Army Barracks. The Parnacotts have a roomer, Dewey Zeigler, age 27, a foreman at the railroad shops. The Parnacotts are listed twice in the 1920 Census, also at the Army Barracks.

The Parnacotts divorced in early 1920.

Beulah married the former roomer, Walter Dewey Zeigler on October 13, 1920 in Franklin County. Beulah gave her age as 27 and was living at 713 South Parsons Avenue.

On December 15, 1920 the property was transferred to H. Eugene Vosbury by Beulah V. Zeigler, attorney-in-fact for Samuel Parnacott.

Samuel married Lucille A. Brooks on March 10, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. He married Alice Green on February 9, 1925 in Detroit. Samuel and Alice are listed on the 1930 and 1940 Census living in Detroit.

Samuel died March 5, 1961.

Herman Eugene Vosbury was born August 17, 1886 in Marysville, Ohio, son of Herman Pearl and Minta Grummonds Vosbury. He married Louise Josephine Merk on May 9, 1908 in Franklin County. Louise was born October 30, 1887 in Ohio, daughter of Joseph and Nellie Busk Merk. They had one daughter, Dorothy L. (1909).

In 1907 Eugene was a shoe maker. By 1917 the Vosburys were living at 587 Edward Street and Eugene was working as a machinist for the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company.

The Vosburys must have divorced after 1923. Eugene married Mary M. before 1940.

Eugene and Mary both died in Columbus. Mary on December 30, 1964 and Eugene on April 12, 1966.

The house went to Sheriff's Sale in January 1926 for a  $1,816.21 balance due on the Vosbury mortgage. The property was transferred to The Columbus Guarantee Mortgage Company on January 13, 1926, and then to C.G.M., Inc. on May 17, 1937.

From 1926 through 1928, the Mitchells lived here.

Arthur Rochester Mitchell was born March 14, 1892 in Papente Gap, Carroll County, Virginia, son of Robert L. and Sarah F. Mitchell. He married Mary E. Brown before 1917. Mary was born about 1895 in Campbell County, Virginia, daughter of Abraham and Maria Brown. They had five children: William (1921), Margaret (1922), Helen (1923), Sarah F. (1924) and Elizabeth (1927).

Previous to living here, as early as 1917, the Mitchells lived at 1339 Granville Street. Arthur worked as a car fitter for the Ralston Steel Car Company.

In 1930, Arthur and the children lived in Hammond, Indiana where he was working as a riveter in a car shop. In 1931 they lived at 1117 1/2 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Columbus. In 1940 Mitchell was a riveter for the Ralston Steel Car Company.

Mary died of tuberculosis at the Franklin County Sanatorium on June 30, 1931.

Samuel and Ethel Berry lived here as early as 1935.

Samuel Berry was born April 7, 1882 in Georgia, son of Samuel and Caroline Jones Berry. He married Ethel Jones on December 31, 1923 in Franklin County. Ethel was born January 25, 1892 in Georgia, daughter of Floyd and Sarah J. Hampton Jones.

Ethel was the widow of Reuben Elington when she and Samuel were married. Samuel was working as a blacksmith and Ethel was a domestic.

In 1930 the Berrys lived at 818 Joyce Avenue. Samuel was a laborer for the steam railroad.

In 1940 Samuel was a warehouse laborer for the WPA. His sister Lucy was living with them.

On October 6, 1943 Samuel and Ethel Berry bought the house.

Samuel died March 11, 1957. Ethel died in Columbus on January 21, 1977.

Ethel transferred the property to Elizabeth Louise Jones on July 21, 1971.

Elizabeth married Albert J. Britton in Clark County on July 21, 1972. Albert was born January 16, 1931.

On June 20, 1974 Elizabeth transferred the property to her married name, Elizabeth L. Britton. At the time the Brittons lived at 1452 Harvard Avenue.

Elizabeth and Albert were divorced on March 25, 1980. The court record indicates that Elizabeth was living out of state at the time.

The house was forfeited to the State of Ohio for back taxes on April 30, 1996.

On February 27, 1997 the property was purchased by the Buckeye Community Hope Foundation for $1,600.

According to their website, the Buckeye Community Hope Foundation was founded in 1991 as a non-profit corporation with the mission of developing affordable housing for low-income families and individuals.

This organization was probably responsible for the demolition of 1633 Vogel Avenue and the construction of the new house numbered 1635 on the same property in about 1998.
