Judd House

Lot 9 L.B. Tussing Trustee Subdivision

Mary and Edith Judd purchased this property from the Tussing Trustee for $750 on May 31, 1904. The deed specified a setback of at least 30 feet and any house constructed to cost at least $2,000. 

This house was built in about 1905 for the Judds. A wood frame garage was added in 1928. 

Harlan Page Judd was born October 21, 1841 in Geneva, New York, son of Elijah and Sarah Clark Judd. He married Mary Angeline Wallace on October 3, 1865. Mary was born January 16, 1843 in Ohio. They had four children: James Elijah (January 19, 1869 - June 5, 1958), William Orville (April 1, 1871 - May 1, 1925), Edith May (March 9, 1874 - April 25, 1948), and George Wallace (November 14, 1880). 

Judd was a Civil War veteran and in 1880 was hardware store clerk, but later worked for the Board of Education as a clerk and purchasing agent. Before moving to this house, the Judds lived at 218 North Washington Avenue for a number of years. 

In 1896 Edith was a teacher at Twenty-Third Street school at the corner of 23rd and Mt. Vernon Avenue. Louise Kanmacher was then the principal of the school and lived at 290 Woodland Avenue. In 1898, Edith was teaching sixth grade at Twenty-Third Street. In 1906 and 1907, Edith was teaching seventh grade at Chicago Avenue School. In 1914, she was at Eastwood Avenue School and in 1916 at Mt. Vernon Avenue Junior High School. In 1929 she was at Pilgrim Junior High School. 

The Judds had some boarders. From 1907 to 1909, carpenter John Alex Mickey lived with them. In 1926, Edith's fellow teachers at Pilgrim School, Elizabeth Inskeep and Sue Sexauer lived at the house. 

Harlan died December 17, 1913. Mary died August 5, 1920. Edith died April 25, 1948. The Judds are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. 

The Guynes purchaed the house from the executor of Edith's estate for $9,000 on October 21, 1949.

Clarence Guynes was born May 10, 1909 in Mississippi, son of Anthony and Fannie Bennard/Bernard Guynes. He married Suleane Hutchins. Suleane was born August 12, 1912 in Sunflower, Mississippi, daughter of Jessie and Leora Cornelius Hutchins. 

Clarence's widowed mother, Fannie lived with them.
Fannie was born February 12, 1882 (February 25, 1883) in Mississippi. Fannie married Anthony Guynes before 1907, his second marriage. Anthony Guynes was born in April 1863 in Mississippi, son of Reuben and Elizabeth Guynes. 

Clarence's nephew Luther C. Guynes (1935) lived at the house in the 1950s. Luther was the son of Thomas J. Guynes (October 15, 1907 - September 6, 1948). Thomas married Jessie Wilks. Jessie was born November 16, 1904 in Bluefield, West Virginia, daughter of George and Mattie Brown Wilks. 

In 1940, Thomas, Luther and Fannie lived in Memphis, Tennessee. 

Clarence died September 12, 1962 in Columbus. Suleane died in Los Angeles, California on February 21, 2001. Fannie died in Los Angeles on January 27, 1977. 

Suleane sold the house to the WIlsons on June 15, 1964.

James Edward Wilson was born April 20, 1907 in Asheville, North Carolina.He married Lillie Elizabeth Owens on January 8, 1926 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Lillie was born January 4, 1909 in North Carolina. They had five children: Helen (1927), Reuben (February 9, 1929 - 1979), William (1932), Shirley (1936) and James (1939).  

In 1930 the Wilsons lived in Asheville, North Carolina. James was a chauffeur for a private family. In 1940 he was a church janitor and Lillie was a laundress. 

By 1954 the Wilsons were living in Columbus. James was a porter at North American Aviation and they lived at 411 North Garfield Avenue. 

James died May 28, 1980. Lillie died March 25, 1999.
