1586 Maryland AvenueThis small grocery was located on the northeast corner of Maryland and Taylor Avenue.
In 1915 the store was owned by E.S. Donley. In about 1923, it was purchased by J.M. Kennedy. From about 1938 to 1941 the store was owned by Louis O. Portisch. Clarence A. Caplinger took over in 1942. Clarence lived at 552 Woodland Avenue. Clarence's son, Herman took over in about 1948. It was listed for sale in 1955. By 1957 it was the Jarvis Market, owned by Perry Jarvis, Jr. who lived at 2621 Avalon Pl. Before buying the store, Perry was a bartender at the Neil House. Columbus Dispatch, December 20, 1960, “A bandit robs an undisclosed amount of cash from the Jarvis Market, 1586 Maryland Ave, after cutting the phone wires to the store.” Columbus Dispatch, September 7, 1963, "Police question a woman suspect about two burglaries in which more than $1000 was taken after Mrs. Alva Harrison, 1586-1/2 Maryland Ave finds a safe in a cucumber patch." |
