40 Callender Avenue
Fischer House

Lot 41 Callender and Rockwell's Subdivision

This house, owned by Winfield S. Courtright was first rented by the Fischers in 1905. The street was originally named Wyandotte Avenue.

Charles F. Fischer was born October 10, 1866 in Cincinnati, son of Frederick A. and Louise Barton Fischer. He married Anna R. Blair in Hamilton County on April 24, 1889. Anna was born November 21, 1869 in Steubenville, Ohio, daughter of James and Mary Jane Robertson Blair.

In 1900 the Fischers lived at 175 19th Street. Charles' mother-in-law, Mary J. (wid. James) Blair, and his nephew, Archibald C. Blair lived with them. From 1902 through 1904 they lived at 168 North 18th Street and Charles was Advertising Manager of the Columbus Dispatch.

In 1908 Fischer was Business Manager for Citizen Publishing Company. In 1912, the Fischers lived at 1720 East Long Street and Fischer was Business Manager for The Columbus Citizen. Fischer would later become President of The Columbus Citizen.

Archibald Campbell "Arch" Blair was born March 12, 1889 in Cincinnati, son of George A. and Eva Kate Bower Blair. Arch died of tuberculosis at the house, on December 31, 1911. He is buried in Cincinnati.

Anna died of tuberculosis on January 26, 1916.

Moore's 1930 History of Franklin County, Ohio, has this biographical sketch of Fischer. "Charles F. Fischer, who is president of the Citizen Publishing Company, of Columbus, is esteemed as a progressive and enterprising business man of Franklin County, where he is prominent and well liked. He is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, born October 10, 1866, the son of Frederick A. and Louise (Barton) Fischer.

Both Frederick A. Fischer and his wife were born in Germany. Their marriage took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a young man Mr. Fischer enlisted for service in the Civil War and was wounded during the battle of Vicksburg, where he suffered the loss of a leg. He was discharged in 1863 with the rank of lieutenant of the Forty seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Fischer returned to Cincinnati, where he spent forty years as official weigher for the city. He retired in 1906 and died in 1910. His wife died in 1876. Both are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Fischer was a Republican, a member of the Lutheran Church, Grand Army of the Republic, and Loyal Legion of the Civil War. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fischer: Charles F., the subject of this sketch; and Frank A., who lives in Cincinnati.

Charles F. Fischer grew up in Cincinnati, attended Woodward High School, and in 1882 was graduated from Nelson Business College. He was associated with an advertising agency in Cincinnati for a time and in 1889 came to Columbus to become associated with the Columbus Press as advertising manager. He resigned from that position in 1895 to accept the position as advertising manager of the Columbus Dispatch, and nine years later was appointed business manager of the Columbus Citizen. Mr. Fischer was elected president of the Citizens Publishing Company in October, 1928.

In 1889 Mr. Fischer married Miss Anna Robertson Blair, the daughter of James Blair, of Steubenville, Ohio. Mr. Blair was a Civil War veteran. Mrs. Fischer died in January, 1916, and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus. Mr. Fischer was married the second time in June, 1918, to Miss Mabel Barron. Her parents were natives of Michigan City, Indiana, and both are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Fischer have no children.

Mr. Fischer is a member of Kinsman Lodge No. 617, Free and Accepted Masons, Scioto Consistory, Thirty second degree, Aladdin Temple, Rotary Club, Columbus Country Club, Columbus Athletic Club, Faculty Club, Advertising Club, and Chamber of Commerce. He is a Republican and holds membership in the Broad Street Methodist Episcopal Church."

Fischer died August 21, 1931 in Perrysburg, Ohio from injuries received in an August 11, 1931 automobile accident.

On April 9, 1913, the Patricks bought the house for $3,000 from the bankruptcy trustees of Winfield S. Courtright.

Albert Ward Patrick was born November 4, 1872 in Urbana, Ohio, son of William M. and Nora Ward Patrick. He married Bessie Luella Rolls on April 30, 1901 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Bessie was born June 25, 1882 in Urbana, Ohio, daughter of Albert and Rachel Carson Rolls. They had two children, Helen Luella (January 27, 1902 - August 26, 1926) and Henry Ward (1909).

In 1910 the Particks lived at 762 Mt. Vernon Avenue and Albert was a railway conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Between 1922 and 1923 the name of the street changed from Wyandotte Avenue to Callender Avenue.

In 1937 the Patricks moved to Los Angeles, California, where they lived the rest of their lives. Albert died on May 18, 1957 and Bessie on October 8, 1966.

On October 27, 1937 the Patricks sold the house to Edjel C. Lutz.

Lutz was probably a friend of the Patricks from Urbana. Lutz never lived here, but being in the real estate business may have purchased the house from the Patricks.

Edjel Clyde Lutz was born October 13, 1886 in Westville, Ohio, son of Truman E. and Mary C. Wiant Lutz. He married Katherine Ferol "Kate" Stradling on November 25, 1908 in Champaign County, Ohio. Katherine was born about 1888 in St. Paris, Ohio, daughter of Achilles and Laura Brown Stradling. They had a son, Charles V. (December 24, 1913).

In the late teens and early 1920s Lutz lived in Urbana and was a city mail carrier. In 1930 Census, Lutz is living in Urbana with his father and his son, and was Secretary of the Auto Club. He is listed in the Census as widowed, but Katherine is also listed in the 1930 Census, listed as divorced, an inmate of the Columbus State Hospital.

In 1931, Lutz was living in Springfield, Ohio and was Associate Editor of The Buckeye Motorist. As early as 1936, though probably in 1938, Edjel married a cousin, Lucy M. Blose. Lucy was born May 1, 1893 in Urbana, daughter of Charles V. and Lida Alice Blose.

By 1940, Edjel was running his own real estate agency.
Lutz was an incorporator of The Champaign County Automobile Club, Inc. on July 18, 1966.

Lutz died in Urbana on March 6, 1972. Lucy died November 11, 1980. They are buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Urbana.

In 1939 and 1940, Philip Rhys and Constance Adams rented the house from Lutz. Philip (1908-1993) was Director of the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, what is now known as the Columbus Museum of Art. He later went on to be the Director of the Cincinnati Museum of Art.

Lutz sold the house to brothers J. Russell and Howard C. Lloyd on September 9, 1941. Lutz probably had met the Lloyds through his automobile club connections.

John Russell Lloyd was born July 30, 1906 in (Grove City,) Ohio, son of Clarence King and Mary Ann Osborn Lloyd. He married Edna W. Hartpence on August 3, 1925. Edna was born June 22, 1904 in Congress, Ohio, daughter of Wilber C. and Blanche S. Baer Hartpence. They had a daughter, Ann C. (1939).

In 1930 J. Russell was Auditor of The Ohio State Automobile Association. He was an accountant and an attorney. The 1940 Census lists his occupation as private practice attorney, legal adviser auto club.

Howard Cecil Lloyd was born November 5, 1903 in Ohio, son of Clarence King and Mary Ann Osborn Lloyd. He married Charlotte A. Thomas about 1929. Charlotte was born about 1906 in California, daughter of William A. and Mary F. Thomas.

In 1930 Howard and Charlotte lived in San Diego, California.

In 1938 Howard was Sales Manager at Rodenfels Chevrolet and they lived at 126 North Eureka Avenue. Howard was still with Rodenfels and living on North Eureka in 1951.

Howard died December 27, 1970 in Upper Arlington, Ohio and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. J. Russell died August 2, 1991 in Columbus and is buried at Union Cemetery.

The Russells sold the house to the Huffs on December 3, 1945.

Francis John "Huffy" Huff was born January 10, 1904 in Coshocton, Ohio, son of Oscar L. and Ida Lenora Eckert Huff. He married Doris Lucille Clark in Coshocton County on May 22, 1922. Doris was born January 6, 1902, daughter of Claude E. and Bertha A. (Treadway) Clark. They had two daughters, Mary Lou (1924) and Ann (1927).

Mary's father, Claude, lived with the Huffs until his death December 11, 1963.

"Francis Huff, former resident of Coshocton and for many years operator of the Huff Tire Shop in Balch Alley, has been made manager of the Firestone Retread Shop on Goodale Ave., Columbus, Ohio." Coshocton Tribune, April 6, 1947

In 1950, Francis was a serviceman for the A.W. Johnson Company and in 1951 and 1953 he was working as a tire recapper. Huff and Lucille later worked at and operated the Grandview Hardware Company.

In 1956 the Huffs moved to 2607 Eastcleft Drive in Upper Arlington.

Doris died April 21, 1979. Huff died June 5, 1979.

On September 29, 1955, the Huffs sold the house to the Connors.

Loraine D. Connor was born about 1905 in (Pearisburg), Virginia, son of Alex H. and Mamie Connor. He married Alease G. Meadows in Montgomery County, Virginia on April 26, 1925. Alease was born May 17, 1909 in Virginia, daughter of Floyd A. and Annie Lybrook. They had three children: Richard Douglas (July 5, 1926 - July 13, 1997), William D. (1927), and Barbara A. (1930).

In 1930 and 1940 the Connors lived in Pearisburg, Virginia. Loraine was a hospital orderly in 1930 and farm laborer in 1940.

In 1953 the Connors lived at 766 Kelton Avenue. Loraine was a stove tender for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Loraine died in Columbus on June 23, 1975. Alease died June 10, 1993.

Barbara A. Bussey bought the house on March 8, 1983.
