1560 Granville Street
Burk House

Lot 55 of Smith's Woodland Park Addition

This lot was originally purchased from the Smiths by Mary Helen Serage on October 6, 1905. Mary died in 1908. Her husband, Francis B. Serage (then remarried and living in Springfield, Massachusetts) sold the property to Lizzie Burk on March 27, 1911.

John Burk was born in Ireland. He may be the John Burk born April 2, 1840, who died in Columbus on March 3, 1882. He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kees. Lizzie was born in 1850 in Ireland. They had six children, including John L. (Aug 1870), Mary G. "Mayme" (May 1878) and Anna (July 1880). Two died before 1900.

Lizzie emigrated to the US about 1858.

The 1900 Census lists Lizzie as divorced. She lived at 371 Dennison Avenue with three of her children and her widowed sister, Ellen Ryan. John L. worked as a railroad brakeman. Mayme and Anna were stitchers at a buggy works.

The 1911 and 1912  City Directory lists Josten R. Edwards at this address. Josten Robert Edwards was Lizzie's son-in-law. He married Mayme in Covington, Kentucky on June 8, 1910, it was his second marriage (He first married Jennie Alice Livingston). He worked as a painter in the Pennsylvania Railroad shops. He and Mayme divorced after 1930. Josten Robert Edwards was born in Baltimore, Ohio on February 23, 1871, son of William and Martha A. Chainey Edwards. Josten died January 24, 1940. Mayme died on May 31, 1949.

In 1920, Lizzie was living with the Edwards at 187 Nineteenth Street. Josten was then a stock keeper for the steam railroad.

Lizzie sold the house on May 16, 1913 to Ada V. Wright. The Wrights assumed the balance due of $1,107.61 on a mortgage held by the Railroad Employees Building and Loan Co.

Joseph O. Dye acquired the house from Pearl M. and Ada V. Wright in a real estate exchange on August 9, 1913. (Pearl M. Wright bought lots 51-52 from Emma S. Smith 495/274 in 1909).

Joseph O. Dye was an insurance agent and maintained this property as a rental.

From 1913 to 1915, Marcus Alexander, Superintendent, Ralston Steel Car Company rented this house.

Marcus Acheson Alexander was born February 20, 1879 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, son of Lee and Elizabeth Wilson Alexander. He married Eleanore Barkee about 1907.
Eleanore was born November 5, 1880 in Orbisonia, Pennsylvania, daughter of John and Jennie Stone Barkee. They had two children, Martha J. (1913) and Marcus W. (1915).

From 1910 to 1912, the Alexanders lived at 1546 Granville Street and Marcus was foreman at Ralston.

After 1920, the Alexanders lived in Chicago and Marcus continued to supervisory work related to steel railroad cars. Eleanore died in Chicago on August 1, 1941.

Frank J. and Margaret T. Macklin bought the house from Joseph O. Dye in September 1915, though the sale was not completed and recorded until January 12, 1917. Joseph Dye was an insurance agent in 1910 and a "state agent" in 1914.

Macklin maintained the property as a rental. He was at one time vice president of the Columbus Fire Underwriter Association. He was also a director of The Central Building Loan and Savings Company in 1916. The Macklins lived at 52 North Ohio Avenue.

Darron Wrinkle rented the house from the Macklins from 1916 through 1919.

Darron Michael Wrinkle was born July 10, 1872 in Atlanta, Georgia, son of Elisha W. and Bridget Crotty Wrinkle. He married Cecile Marion Bell in Franklin County on August 10, 1910. Cecile was born September 21, 1886 in Indianapolis, Indiana, daughter of James M. and Elizabeth Newhouse Bell.

In 1908, Wrinkle was president of The Wrinkle Paint Manufacturing Company at 272-278 Kimball Place. He lived at 1257 East Long Street. Darron's brother, James S. Wrinkle lived with him. James was president of The Columbus Painters Supply Company.

In 1911, Darron was vice president of the paint manufacturing company, and his brother was president and manager.

In 1920, the Wrinkle paint company was merged with the Columbus Paint Company to form the Columbus Paint Manufacturing Company. James Wrinkle was vice president of the new concern.

1910 lived at 1257 Long, comm traveler for a tobacco co.

By 1930, Wrinkle and his wife Cecile had relocated to Miami, Florida. Darron died there on August 20, 1932.

On October 30, 1919 Celia M. Burkert bought the house from the Macklins assuming a mortgage of $3,500. Trafford Tallmadge was a witness on the deed. The Tallmadge family lived in the neighborhood for many years and Trafford himself lived in about four different houses in Woodland Park.

Earl Jacob Burkert was born December 10, 1874 in Indianapolis, Indiana, son of Cephus Milton and Emma Cornelia Barnhart Burkert. He married Celia Margaret Rhoades in Franklin County on August 22, 1907. Celia was born in Columbus on September 17, 1874, daughter of Jacob and Mary Elizabeth Stultz Rhoades. They had two children, John W. (1908) and Mary Elizabeth (1916).

From 1896 to 1899 Burkert ran a restaurant at 187 South High Street and lived with his mother at 76 East Rich Street. His mother ran a boarding house. In 1900, noted Columbus photographers, Lorenzo and Richard Baker or Baker Art Gallery, boarded with her. The Bakers later lived in Woodland Park.

In 1900 Earl was working as a bookkeeper. In 1901 he was again working at a restaurant, but living at 213 South High Street. From 1905 to 1907 he was a conductor and lived again at 76 East Rich Street. In 1910 the Burkerts lived with Earl's mother, uncle, two brothers and boarder Jessie Canfield at 55 Lexington Avenue. Earl was a clerk in a city office. In 1911 the Burkerts lived at 106 Lexington Avenue. In 1919 Earl was Deputy City Treasurer and the Burkerts lived at 159 North 19th Street. Before his death, Earl was a tax inspector for the state.

The Burkerts must have "inherited" Earl's mother's lodger, as Jessie M. Canfield lived at 1560 Granville Street from 1920 to 1935. Jessie was a stenographer.

Earl died April 25, 1939. Celia died May 28, 1945. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery.

The property was transferred to Celia's heirs and children, John and Mary on May 18, 1946. On May 27, they sold it to the Schaibles.

Walter Francis Schaible was born July 9, 1911 in Ohio, son of Eugene C. and Martha V. Powell Schaible. He married Kathleen F. Horschults in Franklin County on July 24, 1939. Kathleen was born December 4, 1917 in Ohio.

MAY HAVE BEEN A RENTAL?? Need directories from 1947-1948.

In 1940 the Schaibles lived with Walter's father at 757 Sullivant Avenue. They returned to this house after selling 1560 Granville Street in 1950. In 1945 Walter was in the Navy and Kathleen was a loan teller at the State Industrial Bank. In 1949 Walter was a training officer for the Veteran's Administration.

Walter died March 9, 1999.
