Institutions

Woodland Park has been the home of two institutions, and has had a hospital immediately adjacent since 1891.

Hare Orphan's Home
72 Woodland Avenue

The first orphans' home was established in Columbus in 1860 and located on West Town Street between High and Front Streets. Also in 1860, the will of Jacob Hare provided a bequest to construct an orphans' home. The Orphans' Home acquired the Woodland Avenue property in an exchange for it's former premises in 1883. The Home leased the Woodland Avenue property, and the orphans were then under the care of the Home for the Friendless. In 1888, the contract with the Home for the Friendless was terminated.

William Miller acquired this property for his home at 72 Woodland Avenue about 1904. Miller's house was later the Glenmont Home for Christian Scientists (1934), and is presently Mansion Day School.

Monypeny Hall
1776 East Broad Street

"The managers of the Columbus Home for the Friendless decided in October 1886 to build a residence home for the purpose of caring for poor, aged women in the Central Ohio area. An association of about one hundred people incorporated in January 1887 to organize the Columbus Old Ladies Home in a house on East Broad Street donated by Colonel A.G. Patton. In June 1883, the cornerstone was laid for a new home on East Broad Street property donated by William Monypeny. In December 1888, this new home was completed, and in January 1891 the name changed to the Columbus Home for the Aged. The name changed to Park View in 1975 and operated until 1931, when endowment fund money was used to move the fourteen remaining residents to the Whetstone Convalescent Center in Columbus."

The building is now owned by the Volunteers of America.

St. Anthony's Hospital
1450 Hawthorne Avenue

St. Anthony's Hospital was dedicated November 22, 1891 by Bishop Watterson. A hospital has been immediately adjacent to Woodland Park ever since.

Originally there were accommodations for over 200 long-term critically-ill patients, with no inside rooms. In 1904 an additional floor was added, and in 1939 a 3-story wing increased bed capacity to 270. The Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis also operated St. Francis-St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing from 1955 to 1970.

The hospital added a modern wing on the west side in 1954. In 1967, the original gothic Victorian building and surrounding park was razed, replaced by the now familiar round tower.

By 1991 the future of the hospital was uncertain. Budget shortfalls had long plagued the hospital. The Franciscan Sisters of The Poor sought a buyer for the hospital. In 1992, St. Anthony's Medical Center was acquired by Quorum Health Group and became Park Medical Center.

The hospital became University Hospital East in 1999.

Public School No. 3

This school was located at the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue (Atcheson Street) and Reed (Taylor) Avenue in 1872. The school closed before 1899.

483 Taylor Avenue is likely the former brick schoolhouse converted into a residence.
