John Stone's Broad Street and Woodland Avenue SubdivisionJohn Stone was born January 19, 1822 in Worthington, Massachusetts, son of John and Lora Parish Stone. He married Lucy Bartlett Hall on May 20, 1852 in Palmyra, New York. Lucy was born April 26, 1827 in Charlton, Massachusetts, daughter of Samuel and Morton Hall. They had a daughter, Lucy Bartlett (February 17, 1853 - January 19, 1940). Mother Lucy died February 25, 1853.
John married Abiah Hubbell Chamberlain on September 13, 1866 in South New Berlin, New York. Abiah was born October 14, 1836 in New Berlin, New York, daughter of Rev. Joseph H. and Esther Chamberlain. They had two children: Esther (September 2, 1867 - March 20, 1877), and John Chamberlain (August 1, 1872 - June 15, 1955). As you can see in the original plat, there was Chamberlain Avenue and Esther Alley, named in memory of Stone's wife and daughter. In 1870 Stone was a dry goods merchant. He lived at 70 West Rich Street. He retired from that business in 1881 and became a dealer in real estate. The Stones, father and adult children, later lived at 533 Franklin Avenue. John was one of the influential members in establishing Franklin Park and Livingston Park. John Stone's uncle, Sumner Stone, with his cousin Jeremy, of Oxford, Massachusetts went to Savannah, Georgia, where he built the first log store at what is now Macon, Georgia, and became a successful merchant. About 1828 Sumner and his elder brother, Jesse, established a successful mercantile business in Columbus, where they built a block of stores and became capitalists. They subsequently located in New York City and their nephews, Alfred P., Dwight, John, Jesse R. and others succeeded them in the business in Columbus, and eventually all were established in this business in separate firms. John and Dwight came to Columbus about 1839 and went to work for their uncles. Stone's sister, Sophia married Fernando Cortez Kelton (who worked for the Stones) and the couple built the house at 586 Town Street in 1852, now known as the Kelton House. John's brother Alfred was also a U.S. Congressman for a partial term, and had an interesting life that ended in suicide in 1865. Abiah died April 9, 1877. Stone died April 16, 1911. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. |
