M.R. Kerney's First AdditionMilton R. Kerney was born in Brookfield, Ohio in January 7, 1843, son of Robert and Mary Scovill Kerney. He married Emma J. Christy about 1866. Emma was born in Ohio in December 1849, daughter of Azra and Rebecca A. Christy. They had a daughter, Cora (September 27, 1867 - January 25, 1953) born in Coalport, Coshocton County, Ohio.
If Milton and Emma were actually married, they were not married for very long. Emma is listed in the 1870 Census with her parents, using her maiden name. Emma married the widowed Erastus Rassita Taylor in Delaware County, Ohio on March 21, 1877. Milton was a veteran of the Civil War. On August 22, 1861 he enlisted in Company C, Ohio 2nd Cavalry Regiment. Mustered out on September 14, 1864 at Columbus. On February 16th, 1895 several businessmen from Columbus, among them Milton R. Kerney, established the Columbus Zoological Company. This first attempt at a zoo for Columbus only lasted a short time, eclipsed by a zoo opened at Olentangy Park in 1903, the Columbus Zoological Company had started too late. They had already beeneclipsed when they opened in 1905 and didn't last out the year. The land in Clintonville was eventually subdivided and sold. In 1896 Kerney was a real estate dealer. He lived at the northeast corner of Front and Naghten Streets. Milton died February 11, 1926. He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. |
