David Kemper Watson was born June 18, 1849 near London, Ohio, son of Jesse and Margaret Jones Watson. He married Louise M. Harrison in Madison County on October 29, 1873. Louise was born in London, Ohio on September 26, 1852, daughter of Hon. Richard A. Harrison. They had two children, Marie Margaret (1875) and James Harrison (1916). Watson graduated from Dickinson College in 1871 and from the law department of Boston University in 1873. He passed the bar and started his law practice. He served as assistant United States district attorney for the southern district of Ohio during the administration of President Arthur. Watson was elected attorney general of Ohio in 1887 and reelected in 1889. In 1890, he successfully prosecuted the Standard Oil Company under the Sherman Antitrust Act, leading the court to dissolve the trust. Watson was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1897). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress. He was appointed by President William McKinley as a member of the commission to revise and codify the laws of the United States. He died in Columbus on September 28, 1918. The Watsons are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. Daniel J. Ryan Daniel Joseph Ryan was born January 1, 1855 in Cincinnati, son of John Patrick and Johanna "Julia" McGrath Ryan. He married Myra Luella Kerr on January 10, 1884. Myra was born February 27, 1858 in Portsmouth, Ohio. They had five daughters: Fanny Honora (1884), Agnes Hunt (1886), Julia Eveleth (1889-1940), Edith Thurston (1891), and Elinor Charlotte (1894-1971). Ryan's parents moved from Cincinnati to Portsmouth when he was seven years old. His parents were Irish. Ryan attended public schools and graduated from high school in 1875. In 1877 he was admitted to the bar. In April 1877, he was elected City Solicitor of Portsmouth, and re-elected in 1879. In 1883 Ryan was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives for the 66th General Assembly, and re-elected in 1885 for the 67th,[3] where he was chosen Speaker pro tem. Ryan was elected Secretary of State in 1888, and re-elected in 1890. He resigned as Secretary of State April, 1891, to accept the office of Commissioner of the World's Fair for the State of Ohio. Secretary of State was his last elected office, and he devoted his later years to private practice and literary pursuits. Ryan served on the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Historical Society for thirty-four years. Ryan died June 15, 1923. The Ryans are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. |
